We all have dreams. Some dreams are small and others large. When we reach one dream there is always another waiting in the wings to take its’ place. The thing about dreams is that we are usually a bit nervous to tell others what our desire is for fear that they will think we’ve lost our minds. Their reaction is quite often made up in our imaginations. True, loyal, and loving family and friends will (normally) be a support system like no other.

There are times when you are the one sharing the dream and there are times when you’re the friend or family member who is asked to show support. This is an honor and should be considered exactly that.

Here are 4 ways to be the best cheerleader you can possibly be:

Become a dreamer too: When you’re told about the vision, ask questions. Lots of questions. Be clear in exactly what they are wanting to achieve. They may not have all the answers yet. Most likely they are still in the planning phase. Listen intently as they share the dream and become familiar with every facet of it so you can become a dreamer of the dream too.

Be the co-pilot: While a great support system will be there every step of the way, it is important to remember that you are not in the driver’s seat. You are the co-pilot. You’re there to lend support, a strong shoulder, and an ear when needed. You are the drawing board in which they can bounce ideas off of. You are quick with a tissue to wipe away tears and ever quicker with wine to celebrate the small wins along the way.

Be the GPS: Dreams very rarely stay on the original course and often need to adjust. Changing the course can be frustrating and deflating. Help them see it doesn’t really matter which path as long as it’s moving forward and with the goal in mind. Just like a GPS, when the dream takes a detour (and it will) you simple help “re-route” and keep going. This is the time when most people question the dream and consider giving up. There is always a way around, though, under or over the roadblock so help them stay the course.

Remember…

Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world. – Harriet Tubman
